ZAK'S CATFISH AND CARP CHUM

Brings in the big ones!

I experimented with at least 20 different chums until I found out that they weren't keeping the fish around for a long time because the bait would dissipate so quickly. So I made my own chum dispenser and chum, here's how to bring in the big one.

Chum Dispenser: you will need a Snapple bottle {with cap} about 10 yards of very cheap 30-50 pound test {for the thickness of the line} and a milk jug.

How to make it: Take the Snapple bottle's label off and rinse it out. Then take the cap and poke a hole in it. Then put the line through the hole and tie an knot under the cap a few times. Screw it onto the bottle you should be able to pick it up and shake it up and down and it should still be secure. Tie the milk jug to the other end. Using a screw driver, poke 3 large holes in the cap around where you tied the line to. Now you have your dispenser.

How it works: Put your chum {recipe below} in there and throw it out with the jug ties to it. This allows it to flow mid-water. The tiny holes allow a slow release of the chum letting the fish come and stay.

Chum Recipe: Get a sealable container and put in 3 strips on bacon. Add chunks of different cheeses {limburger and blue work best}. Throw some live shiners {bait fish} garlic powder a little soy sauce, and what really makes this powerful - a small dead sunfish. Mix all together as best you can then top off with more garlic powder. I dump a little vinegar in there to get it to break down quicker. Many recipes call for the chum to sit in the sun but I found that a very humid warm place will work. I bury the container a foot under ground for about a week, but letting it sit a basement or shed will work too. When the fishing day comes, cover your nose and pour the liquid into the Snapple jar, close the lid and throw out into about 10 feet of water and watch the fish come and stay for the rest of the day!

Watch out I've had some huge snapper show up for this chum - you're in for a fight.
