Channel Lake on the Chain O'Lakes in Northern Illinois

Chain O'Lakes Map Legend

  • Type: Drainage Lake
  • Water: Moderately Clear – decreases in summer due to algae blooms
  • Base: 60% muck, 30% sand & 10% gravel
  • Inlets: Lake Catherine enters on the east side, along with a small creek inlet on the north shore, near the marsh located on the northwest shore
  • Outlets: Lake Marie on the far southern end and another channel outlet on the east side


Species of Fish

There is a variety of species in Channel Lake. Consistent numbers of spawning Yellow Bass, Pumpkinseed and Bluegill can be found on the far southern end of the bay around the channel mouth as it warms quicker than the remainder of the Lake. There is also an improving population of Muskie and Northern Pike. The following lists the types of fish that can be found in Channel Lake, in the order of their abundance:

Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Yellow Bass, Muskie, Walleye, Channel Catfish, Perch, Crappie, White Bass, Northern Pike, Bullhead, Smallmouth Bass, Carp
